Berlin Food Guide – What To Eat In The German Capital

0 0

The German capital has a bit of everything. It has a past, some of which is as dark as you could imagine, but has transformed into one of the most liberal cities in Europe. This quirkiness transpires into the food scene. Rules are thrown out the window, with twists on dishes from all over the world. That is not to say that you cannot find some old-school German dishes, but all tastes are certainly catered for. This Berlin food guide will help you decide where to eat during your stay in the really cool German capital.

Mustafa’s Gemuse Kebap

Evidence of Turkish immigration and its influence can be seen all over Berlin and Germany. This is very obvious in the amount of Turkish food that can be found. Kebab shops, in particular, are a regular sight. That means that when you see a queue going down the street for one particular kebab, you must be on to a winner. I first heard about Mustafa’s when Big7 voted it the 8th best sandwich in Europe, and this made eating there a must when I visited Berlin. It meant close to forty-five minutes standing in line, but it was worth the wait. This chicken kebab was enormous, packed with meat, fried and fresh veg and topped with crumbly feta. Very different and incomparable to those found in Istanbul but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t incredible and I wouldn’t think twice about queuing again.

Opening Hours = 11:00 – 02:00, Sunday to Thursday and 11:00 – 05:00, Friday and Saturday

Price = €3.20

Address = Mehringdamm 32

Curry 36

I love currywurst!! It is probably a good thing that I don’t live in Germany because I would be eating this far too often for my cholesterol levels to handle. Curry 36 could quite possibly be the best I have had. It comes with two types of sausage (I think Rostbratwurst and Bockwurst) and doused in that beautiful sweet and spicy ketchup. Curry 36 is within eyesight of the aforementioned Mustafa’s and with both being crazy popular at all hours of the day, Mehringdamm is sure to be the best street in all of Berlin to grab a bite.

Opening Hours = 09:00 – 05:00

Price = €5.20

Address = Mehringdamm 36

Thai Park

Anyone who has previously visited Thailand is guaranteed to fall in love with Thai Park instantly. Every weekend, a more than decent amount of Thai women set up shop in Preußen Park and sell some of their fresh, home-cooked meals. Smaller bites, salads, full plates of food and popular Thai desserts are all readily available. I have never seen anything else like it in Europe. So simple but so delicious. I definitely felt that something like this could only be pulled off by the Thai people. Grab yourself a bowl of noodles, a cold Chang beer and plonk yourself down on the grass for a true taste of Thailand!

Opening Hours = Every Saturday and Sunday when the weather allows

Price = Prices vary depending on your food choices

Address = Preußen Park

Berlin Food Guide

häppies

Few places represent the freedom of Berlin and its food scene better than häppies. This small restaurant fuzes Chinese-style dumplings with different fillings such as Indian dhal. It is quite possible that no other restaurant does dumplings like this. Savoury and sweet options are available and both are equally delicious. Not a place for traditionalists, but for those who like their food with a little twist, this is a must-visit in Berlin.

Opening Hours = 12:00 – 20:00, Wednesday to Sunday

Price = All >€5

Address = Dunckerstraße 85

Steel Vintage Bikes Café

Berlin is practically comatose on Sunday mornings and the fact that this café is overflowing on what was a dead street made me realise I was onto a winner. Their menu consists of what you would expect from a breakfast place. Pastries, eggs, fruit bowls and a huge selection of pancakes are all available. My personal choice was the pancakes with bacon, maple, syrup and scrambled eggs. It was excellent and even though it was not the most budget-friendly breakfast, especially when coffee was added, it was thoroughly enjoyable.

Opening Hours = 08:00 – 19:00

Price = €9.90

Address = Wilhelmstraße 91

Hasty Pastry

I fell in love with Hasty Pastry the first time I saw a picture of the food that they serve. They serve Italian flatbreads topped with a whole selection of fillings and then folded over. They make for a light and healthy lunch as well as offering an alternative to the quite heavy local cuisine.

Opening Hours = 08:30 – 19:00, Monday to Friday. 09:00 – 17:00 on Saturday and Closed on Sunday

Price = €6.80

Address = Bayreuther Str. 6

Café Creperie Melt

You don’t have to be in France to have amazing crêpes. Café Crêperie Melt is a testament to that. With a menu full of both buckwheat savoury crepes and sweet crepes, it makes for a great place to grab breakfast or lunch. As always, I opted for a savoury crêpe, this time filled with cheese, chorizo and onions. I loved every bite and it reminded me of being back in Paris. Savoury, buckwheat crêpes are a must-eat whenever the opportunity arises.

Opening Hours = 09:00 – 21:00

Price = >€10

Address = Grünberger Str. 40

Scheers Schnitzel

Most people who visit Germany will eat Schnitzel at some point. This fried, breaded pork escalope is a regular sight on menus across the country. Whilst Scheers might not be the most amazing schnitzel you can have, it does represent great value and a unique location. Scheers is much more styled to be a fast-food restaurant than other, similar establishments and is located beneath the railroad tracks across the road from the east side gallery.

Opening Hours = 11:30 – 22:00

Price = All Schnitzels cost less than €10 (Half portions are available)

Address = Warschauer Pl. 18

Fleischerei Domke

A very working class, no-frills meal. Fleischerei Domke is primarily a butcher that serves a more than decent selection of hot meals for prices that will suit any budget. I went with the pork knuckle with potatoes and sauerkraut. The portion size was huge but really tasty. The meat was salty, fell off the bone and was perfectly accompanied by the cabbage. Fleischerei Domke is definitely not the place to go if you want fine dining but it does guarantee good, hearty and wholesome food.

Opening Hours = 06:30 – 22:00, Monday to Friday. Open at 08:00 on Saturday and 10:00 on Sunday

Price = €6

Address = Warschauer Str. 64

Henne

You will be hard-pressed finding a restaurant more old-school and traditional in all of Berlin. Henne does just one thing, chicken. A broiled, half of chicken to be precise. Cooked to order, the chicken arrives with the perfect, crispy and salty skin which is hiding the tender, juicy breast meat below. The chicken is served with a slice of bread and goes so well with one of their two salads on offer, the potato salad and the cabbage salad. Chicken, potato salad and beer makes for one of the simplest, yet tastiest meals I had in Berlin.

Opening Hours = 17:00 – 23:30, Closed on Monday

Price = €9.80

Address = Leuschnerdamm 25

Berlin Food Guide

Berlin guarantees an excellent variety of delicious food at budget-friendly prices. You can eat breakfast at a hipster café, lunch at a food truck and dinner at the most old-school and traditional restaurant. This sums up not only the food scene, but Berlin in itself. A crazy, very alternative city where young meets old in every way imaginable. This Berlin food guide guarantees visitors a fantastic eating experience when they visit the German capital.
