Hello and welcome to my website, www.roamingirishman.com. My Name is Adam Ablitt. I was born in Dublin in 1992 and spent the first five years of my life there before moving to Crawley, a small town in the south of England. I would spend the next 6 years there before moving back to Ireland to the growing town of Navan, about 45 minutes outside of Dublin city. As a child, beyond regular trips to France and returning, either home to Ireland, or going to visit family in England, I never really got the chance to travel. With a parent that would not fly, any trips we made were by land so destinations were certainly limited.
The tide for me started to turn aged 16 when my family had to travel to Philadelphia for a tournament my sister was competing in. The city was so different than anything I had seen before, but little did I know a seed had been planted. After a road-trip around Europe with a friend that was planned, but never materialised, I knew that long term travel was something I was desperate to experience in the future.
An economic downturn in Ireland as I finished education, meant that money was not coming in regularly and my trips were short and limited. That is, until aged 21, when I made the jump and moved around the world to Australia. I would spend the next 6 months there seeing places I had dreams of seeing for a long time and loved every minute of it. I had a return ticket that I pre-booked but wanted to change, as I was not ready to leave the land down under. After talking to my airline, I realised that I could delay my journey home. I could stopover in Malaysia for 3 months free of charge. Before I knew it I was heading to the continent that interested me more than any. Asia.
Landing in Kuala Lumpur, I was amazed. I felt like a child, as I stood in awe of the speed of the city around me. It is fair to say I was hooked and was never going to be the same again. I travelled to Thailand and Cambodia before going home, with my mind set on returning as soon as possible. Within 1 year I was heading back to Asia for 6 months. I knew that the travel bug had bitten me hard and I loved every minute of it. Of course, it was not all perfect, I have been pickpocketed, robbed, scammed, suffered from food poisoning and been in a very minor motorcycle accident, but I would never change any of it.
To this day I am still travelling as much as I can, eating the delicious food that I love so much, experiencing different cultures and taking in all the world has to offer. All my travels are on a tight budget, I don’t have a trust fund or parents paying for me to travel, so I work, I save and then I travel.
I created this website so that I could share my travel experiences. Places I recommend and wouldn’t recommend. A huge part of the site will be about incredible food I get to eat on a daily basis around the world, where you can find it and how much it will cost you. If I inspire one person or even give a small bit of guidance that helps a traveller on their trip, like so many incredible travel bloggers and writers, did for me, then it will have been a success.
So join me on my travels, read about the places I have been, and let it inspire you to visit there too. Or look at all the great food I have eaten, and let your stomach guide you around the world.
Thank you very much for reading and I hope you enjoy the site,
Adam Ablitt
